PM emsyj the 12 week scan is the most accurate, babies grow at a very predictable rate between 10 and 13 week roughly so they can date you accurately from your 12 week scan and in most circumstances will stick with this date no matter what any future scans say. Having said that my date has been changed late on and like you Fairythalia it makes absolutely no sense. Around 20 weeks I moved to a different area and changed hospitals, at 28 weeks I had a scan that dated me at 26th Jan. I discussed this with my consultant who said they would rather use their own dates and because it is only 8 days difference there is no risk of them delivering baby too early if they induce me 12 days over that date. However this new date means I would have had to have conceived during my last period so makes no sense at all. You must be really peeved to have gone from 8 weeks to 6 weeks, I was so excited to jump from 35 to 36 weeks, I would have been gutted if they moved me in the opposite direction!! Presumably you are having another scan at 12 weeks? I would wait until then and it should correct itself to a more accurate date as I said baby grows at a very predictable rate then and millimetres of difference can date you very accurately. Sorry you are so frustrated by your scan and good luck for the next one!!

A large number of mails I received are about fetal anomalies, I have therefore tried to put together a Catalogue of Web pages which describe in some detail specific congenital anomalies that are diagnosable by ultrasound. You can visit the page here. I am pregnant for 7 weeks. I went for a scan yesterday and was told I should have a full bladder. They made me drink 4 cups of water and my bladder was almost bursting at the end of the session.

Is this really necessary? A full bladder is usually necessary when the scan is done abdominally and in the early part of pregnancy. This would tend to lift the uterus up a little bit and being in front displaces the bowels away and act as an echo-lucent windows for the ultrasound to pass through. Ultrasound doesn’t go through air as in the bowels well but transmits perfectly through liquid as in the case of the urine in the bladder. Your doctor will be able to see things so much more clearly with the full bladder there especially the presence or absence of fetal heart beat.

In a vaginal scan however, a full bladder will not be necessary.

Jun 15,  · Its accuracy for GA assignment is reduced considerably, and estimates may have confidence intervals of plus or minus 3 weeks. More recent work with pregnancies resulting from in vitro fertilization suggests that third trimester scans are considerably more accurate than previously thought, with random errors (1 SD) of days.

Underestimation of gestational age by conventional crown-rump length growth curves. Reprinted with permission of American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Variations in the measurement of CRL can be attributed to differences in fetal growth patterns. Such differences are related to factors similar to those that influence birth weight curves, including maternal age and parity, prepregnancy maternal weight, geographic location, and population characteristics.

These include incorporation of the yolk sac or lower limbs in the CRL measurement, excessive curling or extension of the fetus, and tangential section of the trunk. The biparietal diameter BPD is one of the most commonly measured parameters in the fetus. Campbell was the first investigator to link fetal BPD to gestational age 20 ; however, since this original report, numerous publications on this subject have appeared in the literature.

The BPD is imaged in the transaxial plane of the fetal head at a level depicting thalami in the midline, equidistant from the temporoparietal bones and usually the cavum septum pellucidum anteriorly Fig. Transaxial image of the fetal head for biparietal diameter and head circumference measurements. Diagram of the transaxial ultrasound image of the fetal head at the level of the thalami large arrows , midline falx curved arrow , and cavum septi pellucidi open arrow. Gestational age assignment is based on the mean BPD; however, a single BPD encompasses a range of ages in which most fetuses of that size are most likely to fall Table 4.

A number of factors may contribute to variation or inaccuracy in the BPD measurement.

Share Your Story The worry for patients and health care professionals is that any chest pain may originate from the heart. Angina is the term given to pain that occurs because the coronary arteries blood vessels to the heart muscle narrow and decrease the amount of oxygen that can be delivered to the heart itself. This can cause the classic symptoms of chest pressure or tightness with radiation to the arm or jaw associated with shortness of breath and sweating.

Unfortunately, many people don’t present with classic symptoms, and the pain may be difficult to describe — or in some people may not even be present. Instead of angina or typical chest pressure, their anginal equivalent symptom they get instead of chest pain may be indigestion , shortness of breath, weakness , dizzyness, and malaise. Women and the elderly are at higher risk for having an atypical presentation of heart pain. The narrowing of blood vessels or atherosclerosis is due to plaque buildup.

Plaque is a soft amalgam of cholesterol and calcium that forms along the inside lining of the blood vessel and gradually decreases the diameter of the blood vessel and restricts the flow of blood. If the plaque ruptures, it can cause a blood clot to form and completely block the vessel. When a coronary artery completely occludes becomes blocked , the muscle it supplies blood to is at risk of dying.

This is a heart attack or myocardial infarction. In most circumstances, this pain is more intense than routine angina, but again, there are many variations in signs and symptoms. The diagnosis of angina is a clinical one. After the health care professional takes a careful history and assesses the potential risk factors, the diagnosis is either reasonably pursued or else it is considered not to be present.

First trimester scans

Overview Overview The estimation of pregnancy dates is important for the mother, who wants to know when to expect the birth of her baby, and for her health care providers, so they may choose the times at which to perform various screening tests and assessments, [ 1 ] such as serum screening, assessment of maturity, and induction of labor for postdate pregnancies. The 3 basic methods used to help estimate gestational age GA are menstrual history, clinical examination, and ultrasonography.

The first 2 are subject to considerable error and should only be used when ultrasonography facilities are not available. The date of feeling the first fetal movements quickening is far too unreliable to be useful. The date of the first documented positive pregnancy test and the beta-human chorionic gonadotropin bHCG level may help ascertain the minimum gestational age.

In women who conceived following assisted reproduction techniques, the date of embryo transfer is known and may date the pregnancy accurately.

Jul 22,  · 1. Introduction. Accurate dating of gestational age is central to good obstetric care. It allows the clinicians to better time gestation-specific antenatal screening tests, reduces erroneous labelling of pregnancies as very preterm, preterm, and small-for-gestational-age, and decreases the risk of inappropriate induction of labour [1–5].

They just use that date because it’s something concrete they can base it off of before they can see the actual measurements on the ultrasound. The ultrasound will be more accurate. I know it’s a little discouraging because you feel set back. My doctor sent me for a second dating ultrasound a few weeks later and it was easier for them to date off of.

Maybe ask your doctor to schedule another dating ultrasound for two weeks from now? Don’t worry though, my 6 week scan when I thought I was almost 8 weeks also showed a strong heart beat and my second scan had already showed how much the baby had grown. The baby will be measured, and the anatomy examined in detail. It is recommended that all pregnant women have a scan in the first trimester at around 12 weeks of pregnancy to confirm their dates. First trimester ultrasonic scans may show ‘soft’ markers for chromosomal abnormalities, such as an increased fetal nuchal translucency back of the neck to enable detection of Down’s syndrome fetuses.
