Authorities say the student apparently took his own life. A motorist driving by the lake early Sunday morning saw the victim and called the Grady County Sheriff’s Office. Undersheriff Phil Blevins says McCollin was an art student at the university. Local authorities contacted officials in northwest Oklahoma and an individual there knew the family. Blevins said that McCollin was last seen alive Saturday night. Retired Master Sergeant Cynthia Givens was the speaker. Givens followed her father and older brothers to the military.

The traditional Hopi knew all along. For nearly 50 years, their pleas to the federal government to prevent mining in the heart of their homeland on Black Mesa have been ignored.

Relative dating Cross-cutting relations can be used to determine the relative ages of rock strata and other geological structures. Methods for relative dating were developed when geology first emerged as a natural science. Geologists still use the following principles today as a means to provide information about geologic history and the timing of geologic events. The principle of uniformitarianism states that the geologic processes observed in operation that modify the Earth’s crust at present have worked in much the same way over geologic time.

In geology, when an igneous intrusion cuts across a formation of sedimentary rock , it can be determined that the igneous intrusion is younger than the sedimentary rock. Different types of intrusions include stocks, laccoliths , batholiths , sills and dikes. The principle of cross-cutting relationships pertains to the formation of faults and the age of the sequences through which they cut. Faults are younger than the rocks they cut; accordingly, if a fault is found that penetrates some formations but not those on top of it, then the formations that were cut are older than the fault, and the ones that are not cut must be younger than the fault.

Paul Berry After building the product for Huffington Post, and owning the product and engineering groups at AOL after we were acquired, it was clear to me there was a huge gap between what the current CMS offering gave the world and what the world needed. Five years later we are at scale, moving the needle and doing to WordPress what Airbnb did to Craigslist. Social and Centralized WordPress, Drupal, and the custom CMS solutions of the world are all independent, non-connected instances that each need to be updated individually.

There are over 87 million instances of WordPress alone in the world, and each security upgrade, feature update, and every other single thing has to be updated for each site individually.

History[ edit ] The location of Kohala relative to the other volcanoes of the island Studies of the volcano’s lava accumulation rate have put the volcano’s age at somewhere near one million years. Decreasing eruptions combined with increasing erosion caused Kohala to slowly weather away and subside into the ocean. It is difficult to determine the original size and shape of the volcano, as the southeast flank has been buried by volcanic lava flows from nearby Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa.

The famous sea cliffs of the windward Kohala shoreline stand as evidence of the massive geologic disaster, and mark the topmost part of the debris from this ancient landslide. However, several samples of a more recent date have been obtained. The samples have been treated with skepticism by the scientific community, and their ages have been directly challenged.

Measurement of N, the number of 14 C atoms currently in the sample, allows the calculation of t, the age of the sample, using the equation above. The above calculations make several assumptions, such as that the level of 14 C in the atmosphere has remained constant over time. The calculations involve several steps and include an intermediate value called the “radiocarbon age”, which is the age in “radiocarbon years” of the sample: Radiocarbon ages are still calculated using this half-life, and are known as “Conventional Radiocarbon Age”.

Lakes on Mars The Mariner 9 spacecraft caused a revolution in our ideas about water on Mars. Huge river valleys were found in many areas. Images showed that floods of water broke through dams, carved deep valleys, eroded grooves into bedrock, and traveled thousands of kilometers. Research published in June mapped 40, river valleys on Mars, roughly quadrupling the number of river valleys that had previously been identified.

Recent work suggests that there may also be a class of currently enigmatic, smaller, younger Hesperian to Amazonian channels in the midlatitudes, perhaps associated with the occasional local melting of ice deposits. Flow was from bottom left to right.

Earth sciences – Radiometric dating: In , shortly after the discovery of radioactivity, the American chemist Bertram Boltwood suggested that lead is one of the disintegration products of uranium, in which case the older a uranium-bearing mineral the greater should be its proportional part of lead. Analyzing specimens whose relative geologic ages were known, Boltwood found that the ratio of.

Earthquake Mitigation Measures Minimizing or avoiding the risks from earthquakes involves three subject areas. First is the ability to predict their occurrence. While scientists cannot routinely predict earthquakes, this area is of growing interest and may be a key factor in reducing risks in the future. This information is used to address the third area of earthquake risk reduction-mitigation measures.

Following a discussion of prediction, assessment, and mitigation, the types and sources of earthquake information are presented. Earthquake Prediction A report on an erroneous prediction of an earthquake in Lima, Peru, states: Earthquake prediction is still in a research and experimental phase. Although a few successful predictions have been made, reliable and accurate predictions having a long lead time, and useful location and magnitude estimates, are many years in the future Gersony, Some progress is being made in regional, long-term prediction and forecasting.

Recent studies show that major earthquakes do not recur in the same place along faults until sufficient time has elapsed for stress to build up, usually a matter of several decades. In the main seismic regions, these “quiet” zones present the greatest danger of future earthquakes. Confirming the seismic gap theory, several gaps that had been identified near the coasts of Alaska, Mexico, and South America experienced large earthquakes during the past decade.

Moreover, the behavior of some faults appears to be surprisingly constant: Monitoring these seismic gaps, therefore, is an important component of learning more about earthquakes, predicting them, and preparing for future ones.

Tree rings are used to calibrate radiocarbon measurements. Calibration is necessary to account for changes in the global radiocarbon concentration over time. Results of calibration are reported as age ranges calculated by the intercept method or the probability method, which use calibration curves. The internationally agreed calibration curves for the period reaching as far back as BC are those produced by PJ Reimer et al. Calibration curves have a dendro timescale on the x-axis and radiocarbon years on the y-axis.

Calibration is not only done before an analysis but also on analytical results as in the case of radiocarbon dating —an analytical method that identifies the age of a material that once formed part of the biosphere by determining its carbon content and tracing its age by its radioactive decay.

The food pantry is open year-round, and is especially helpful when international students have nowhere to go during the holidays. Among the items needed are soups on the go, microwavable pastas, small cartons of milk, single serving cereals, fruit cups, and toiletries.

Messenger Radiocarbon dating has transformed our understanding of the past 50, years. Professor Willard Libby produced the first radiocarbon dates in and was later awarded the Nobel Prize for his efforts. Radiocarbon dating works by comparing the three different isotopes of carbon. Isotopes of a particular element have the same number of protons in their nucleus, but different numbers of neutrons. This means that although they are very similar chemically, they have different masses. The total mass of the isotope is indicated by the numerical superscript.
